These are the sketches in various views of the ceramic narrative project. The assignment for this was to tell a story, use an exaggerated scale to emphasize a piece of the narrative, and make it within 9 inches tall. I represent an abstract transitionary point in my life moving between houses. I wanted to create a ring of dolls holding a little world, like a snow globe.
The piece was made from red sculpture clay so it would hold its shape better and be easier to work with if it dried unevenly. Each part was made separately with a different method then added on together.
The circle of people holding the platform was made via coil method with a bucket as a mold (so it would not collapse under it weight), then cutting out the forms of people from the covered bucket, like paper dolls which they were inspired by. The platform the person sits on was made by putting a slab on a chuck and letting it dry to achieve a perfectly round form. Then the person was made by hand, pinching and molding from a piece of clay.
